Trafford Council has announced a major parking crackdown on eight roads near Old Trafford, aiming to tackle chronic obstruction and congestion caused by commuter and event parking. While these measures are centred in Trafford, they carry implications for Oldham residents who frequently travel to the area for work or attend events at the Old Trafford stadium, as stricter enforcement could affect travel plans and parking availability.

The proposed restrictions include the introduction of red routes (meaning no stopping at any time) on John Gilbert Way, Europa Gate, Europa Way, a small section of Fraser Place, and part of Westinghouse Road between Mosley Street junction and Europa Circle. The remainder of Westinghouse Road will have 'no waiting at any time' restrictions implemented. 'No waiting and no loading' rules will be introduced on Cornbrook Road, the Bridgewater Way slip roads, and the adopted section of Pomona Strand near its junction with Trafford Road.

The crackdown is driven by reports of high parking demand from daily commuters, which has led to obstructions and blocked access for local businesses. A decision report notes that on John Gilbert Way, inconsiderate parking has prevented access for various haulage companies, hindering their daily operations. During events at the nearby stadium, the surrounding highway network experiences significant congestion, with vehicles parked obstructively on both carriageways and footways. Even short waits for loading or unloading can result in prolonged occupation of unsuitable areas, further contributing to obstruction and reduced network efficiency.

These changes may require adjustments for Oldham residents when travelling to and from Old Trafford.
