New road markings have been installed at a key junction near Dovestones Reservoir in a bid to tackle congestion that has plagued the popular beauty spot.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Andy Holian, who covers Saddleworth and Lees, confirmed in a recent Neighbourhood Alert that a ‘keep clear’ box has been added at the junction of Holmfirth Road and Bank Lane – the main entrance to Dovestones.

The move follows a meeting with Oldham Council, during which local officers requested improvements to the roads around the reservoir. Sergeant Holian wrote to residents: “I am pleased to share that, following a recent meeting with Oldham Council and a request for improvements to the roads around Dovestones, work has now been carried out.”

Officers will now be stepping up patrols in the area to ensure drivers obey the new markings. Sergeant Holian added: “My team and I will be conducting additional patrols around Dovestones and the surrounding roads. Anyone who fails to comply with this new road marking may be dealt with for the offence of wilful obstruction.”

The measure is intended to prevent a repeat of the severe congestion seen earlier this year, when the road became completely blocked by drivers attempting to access the car park when it was already full. Marshals had been working hard to keep traffic moving, but the situation worsened as vehicles queued on the main road.

Sergeant Holian urged visitors to follow traffic management signs and consider alternative parking where possible. He said: “I kindly ask all visitors and those passing through the area to follow the current traffic management signs and enforcement in place. Where possible, please seek alternative parking to avoid congestion and road blockages, which can hinder access for emergency services and prevent local residents from reaching their homes.”

Dovestones remains a huge draw for walkers, families and tourists from across Oldham and beyond, but the popularity of the site has regularly caused problems on the surrounding roads, particularly at weekends and during school holidays. Local residents have long called for action to prevent the gridlock that often spills back into Greenfield village.

Recent figures showed that hundreds of motorists, including taxi drivers, continued to flout parking restrictions on the A635 Holmfirth Road and nearby side roads, with more than 800 fines issued over a period of months. The new ‘keep clear’ box aims to address this by keeping the junction free for traffic at all times.

Sergeant Holian thanked the community for their cooperation and support. “Thank you for your cooperation and continued support in keeping the area safe and accessible for everyone,” he said.

The enforcement drive is part of a wider effort by Oldham Council and Greater Manchester Police to manage traffic around Dovestones, which has been a persistent flashpoint for congestion. Motorists are reminded to plan ahead, use designated parking where possible, and avoid blocking key routes to ensure the area remains safe for all.
