A new lamppost poppy appeal will form part of Austerlands' Remembrance commemorations, the Saddleworth Independent reports. The Scouthead and Austerlands Community Group launched the appeal, which the Saddleworth branch of the Royal British Legion supports.

People are asked to sponsor the poppies already in place across Scouthead and Austerlands, creating a visual tribute. The scheme replaces the box collections previously held on the Act of Remembrance Day at Saddleworth's oldest Great War memorial. Event organiser David Needham said it "guarantees that 100 per cent of whatever is donated goes direct to the Royal British Legion", because the poppies have already been paid for from Paul Sykes' good causes fund.
