An investigation is underway after a 75-year-old man was found dead at a block of flats in Bolton, prompting fresh concerns about safety in residential complexes across Greater Manchester.

Police were called to Hargreaves House on Ormrod Street in Bolton town centre at around 8am on Friday morning (July 17). Officers discovered the body of the pensioner inside the address, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 49-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody for questioning. Detectives from Greater Manchester Police’s Major Incident Team have launched a murder investigation and are pursuing several lines of enquiry to establish the full circumstances of the death.

Residents at Hargreaves House described their shock at the incident and expressed fears for their own safety. One resident who spoke to reporters said he "didn't feel safe" in the building, which is protected by CCTV and a keypad-controlled gate. Another claimed the area was "plagued by drug dealing" and that neighbours "keep themselves to themselves". A woman living nearby said: "It’s not good. Things are always happening."

The victim's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. Formal identification of the body has yet to take place.

Detective Inspector Louise Kelly, who is leading the investigation, said: "I would like to express my deepest condolences to the victim's family and loved ones as they navigate through this loss. They will continue to be supported by our specialist officers during this difficult time. It is our priority to obtain some answers regarding the full circumstances of this tragic incident, and we are appealing for information from the public to help us progress our investigation."

Police are continuing to gather evidence at the scene. Forensic officers were seen in the car park of the block on Saturday morning as the investigation entered its second day.
