The major incident declared for wildfires at Dovestone and Swineshaw has been stood down.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the decision on Monday, August 3, following a review. The fires are now largely contained and the risk of significant further spread is substantially reduced.

The move comes after weeks of intensive firefighting operations involving emergency services, landowners and partner agencies. GMFRS praised the response for demonstrating "incredible professionalism, commitment and resilience".

However, fire chiefs stress the incident is not over. Fire remains present beneath the surface in some areas. Crews will continue to monitor conditions and tackle any flare-ups.

The public is still urged to stay away from affected moorland, keep access routes clear for emergency vehicles, and avoid barbecues, campfires, fireworks or any naked flames on or near the moorland.
