Shakespeare's Macbeth is heading to an unlikely stage. Oldham Coliseum Theatre is staging a new adaptation of the tragedy inside Liquid & Envy nightclub on Retiro Street, with a 19-performance run from October 23 to November 7.

The production is the first show from new Creative Director Nick Bagnall, who has relocated the action to a late-1970s setting inspired by Oldham's clubs, mills and changing social landscape.

"Macbeth asks profound questions about power, identity and what it means to be a man," Bagnall said. "Those questions feel urgent in a proud industrial town like Oldham that is navigating huge social and economic change."

He said he wanted to "blow the dust off Shakespeare" and create an experience for audiences whether they had "seen Macbeth ten times or never encountered it before."

The production will explore themes of masculinity, identity and ambition, using music and supernatural elements influenced by close-harmony vocal traditions.

Chief Executive Martina Murphy said the show was "a huge moment for the Coliseum" and announced "the kind of theatre we intend to make."

The staging comes as the Coliseum works to return to its refurbished home on Fairbottom Street. The theatre is continuing to produce large-scale work while operating from temporary and alternative venues.

Tickets range from £15 concessions to £28 standard admission. Performances take place at Liquid & Envy on Retiro Street. Tickets are available at coliseum.org.uk.

The autumn-winter season also includes Oldham-born artist Mark Newsome's You're My World, spoken word and hip hop production Saints on a Bridge from Testament, and dance theatre show Juliet & Romeo from Lost Dog.

Other highlights include immersive bus journey experience JOY RIDE, interactive game The Night of the Werewolves, circus and physical theatre production The Hideout, and family festive show Peter Pan. Comedy performances from Stephen Bailey, Tez Ilyas and Mick Ferry are also planned, alongside workshops and creative events.
