Levers Fish and Chips has reopened opposite the Home Bargains store in the Spindles at Market Place after 35 years serving the community of Oldham.

The business, owned by George Gabrilatsou and Savvas Eleftheriou, first opened at Tommyfield Market in 1991. The owners have brought with them the blue plaque from Tommyfield Market, commemorating Oldham as the birthplace of the fish and chip shop since around 1860.

The shop officially launched last week, with locals turning out to welcome it back. George Gabrilatsou said: "We're absolutely delighted with the response. The support we've received has been incredible and it's been fantastic to see so many familiar faces, as well as new customers, coming through the doors."

Savvas Eleftheriou said: "This business has been part of the community for many years and moving to a new home is a big step. We couldn't have asked for a better start and we're excited about what the future holds."

The reopening comes as the recently opened market brings more visitors into the town centre as part of a £450million town centre investment. Cards Direct and North West have also recently joined the Spindles, while H. Samuel, Daniel Christian Menswear and Lloyds Bank have all completed major refurbishments.

Emma Barton, Executive Director of Place for Oldham Council, said Levers had been an important part of Oldham's story for many years and the response from customers showed how much local people valued long-standing businesses. James Kington, Oldham Council's Director of Growth, said the reopening added to the momentum across the Spindles and the wider town centre.
