Jim McMahon calls for greater enforcement over late-night fireworks in Oldham
Jim McMahon MP called for enforcement after late night fireworks disturbed Oldham residents and left litter on council fields.

Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton MP Jim McMahon has called for greater enforcement over late-night fireworks after residents complained about repeated disturbance.
Mr McMahon said a recent display took place on council-owned playing fields and a car park off Broadway, behind San Rocco restaurant. Discarded firework packaging and litter were left on the football pitches and car park following the gathering.
He said the packaging suggested the fireworks were imported by a company in Bolton and described them as being on a scale beyond what many people would buy for private use.
The incident has been reported to Oldham Council and Greater Manchester Police, and Mr McMahon has called for CCTV from the area to be reviewed.
"Another night another blast of fireworks late into the night causing distress and nuisance to local people," he said. "It's wrong that such a small minority of selfish people believe their moment of drama is more important than the wellbeing of their neighbours."
Mr McMahon called for more visible enforcement around gatherings and celebrations where fireworks are used late at night.
"The police must enforce the law, and the council must support them with its community safety powers and as the landowner in this case," he said. "We also need much more visible enforcement from authorities for late night meetings, weddings and other celebrations which use fireworks late into the night."
The MP said he had received numerous complaints about fireworks and the response residents received when reporting concerns to the authorities.
"Having seen the responses I share the concern that residents are simply being passed from pillar to post and the issue is not being resolved," he added.
Mr McMahon is also encouraging constituents to respond to a national consultation on fireworks and pyrotechnics, which runs until 7 October. The consultation can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/fireworks-and-pyrotechnics-in-the-uk/fireworks-and-pyrotechnics-in-the-uk.
