Hundreds of fish died after firefighting water and foam from a blaze at a Greenfield business entered the River Tame.

The fire broke out on Sunday, August 17, at Sachets, a company on Wellington Industrial Park that makes cleaning products and antiseptic wipes. The site sits behind the village's Tesco supermarket on Wellington Road.

Residents on nearby Knoll Close were evacuated from their homes while firefighters dealt with burning chemicals. Tesco was closed for several hours but reopened that afternoon.

Water used to fight the fire had been pumped from the River Tame and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. Despite booms being put in place, foam and water bypassed them and entered the river.

Environment Agency officers inspected the area, with foam travelling downstream as far as Mossley. Hundreds of fish were found dead in the water.

Two days later, on Monday, August 18, no dead animals were found.

An Environment Agency spokesperson said: "Although containment measures were taken, some firewater runoff entered the River Tame. Officers recorded several hundred dead fish in the affected area."

Fisheries officers returned to the site and confirmed no additional fish fatalities had been identified. Foam remains visible on the river, particularly around weirs where the water is more turbulent, but observations indicate it is dispersing downstream.

The Environment Agency said it will continue to monitor the situation to assess any ongoing environmental impacts and determine next steps.
