Greater Manchester Police Sergeant Carl Beck, who serves the region including Oldham, has been honoured for his incredible bravery after disarming a knifeman following a vicious stabbing in Wigan. He received the prestigious 2025 Chief Constable’s Bravery Award and has now been recognised by the Police Federation for his actions.

The incident unfolded when 19-year-old Esmaeel Mohamed walked into a shop and stabbed a victim. Body-worn camera footage captured Sgt Beck chasing Mohamed and deploying his Taser. During the pursuit, Sgt Beck yelled, "You're going to get Tasered mate, get on the floor," before Mohamed dropped to the ground and replied, "It's crazy isn't it." He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Despite conflicting reports suggesting multiple stabbings, Sgt Beck bravely confronted Mohamed alone. Mohamed even tried to take Sgt Beck's Taser from him, but the officer managed to fire it and detain him. Sgt Beck then provided "exemplary aftercare" to both the victim and the suspect, and secured the crime scene for vital evidence.

Speaking about his role, Sgt Beck said, "I became a police officer because I wanted to make a real difference and help keep my community safe. It’s a role I genuinely enjoy, and response policing allows me to see that impact first-hand." He emphasised the importance of welfare and mental health in his team, stating, "My officers are often first to arrive at difficult incidents. It’s essential they feel supported."
