The result of the Greater Manchester mayoral by-election is expected later today as officials count hundreds of thousands of ballot papers at the Co-op Live arena.

Voters across Greater Manchester went to the polls on Thursday to choose Andy Burnham's successor as mayor.

The election uses the supplementary vote system, where voters can select both a first and a second preference candidate. If no candidate gets an outright majority in the first count, the lowest-ranking candidates are eliminated and their supporters' second preferences are redistributed until one candidate has more than half of the votes.

Seven candidates are contesting the election. Among those named are Bev Craig for Labour and the Co-operative Party, Phil Eckersley for the Conservative Party, and Richard Kilpatrick for the Liberal Democrats.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for key decisions affecting Greater Manchester, including policing, transport, housing, economic development, and the region's overall budget.
