Grandpa Greene's will close its original Diggle site on Wednesday, September 2 before completely demolishing and rebuilding the canalside location.

The Saddleworth business said this marks "the beginning of the biggest chapter" in its history. It plans to make a major investment to create a new hospitality destination while preserving the character, charm and heritage.

Since opening in 2005, the company has grown from "a small wooden ice cream shed". It also runs Greene's Bistro in Uppermill. The business thanked customers and staff for their support over the past 21 years.

Grandpa Greene's has previously faced scrutiny from Oldham Council over the large number of visitors to the site. The council restricted its opening hours due to a "serious public health risk". The business was later allowed to reopen after implementing additional safety measures.

More recently, Grandpa Greene's received a gold award in the Best Independent Café/Coffee Bar category at The Café Life Awards.
