A massive wildfire continues to sweep across the moorland at Dovestone reservoir in Saddleworth, leaving local residents angry and deeply concerned as fire crews battle the blaze in scorching conditions. The alarm was raised on Saturday evening, with dozens of firefighters deployed to the popular beauty spot.

The fire broke out on Saturday, July 11, with emergency services responding to reports at around 8:45pm. Witnesses described hearing loud bangs resembling gunshots before seeing fireworks igniting the sky in what one described as a "Universal Studios style display."

Videos posted on social media appear to show a group of youths setting off fireworks in the area. In one clip, a young woman is seen handling a rocket launcher-style firework, which then sparks a fire in the dry grass. The flames quickly spread across the hillside.

It is believed the gathering was intended as a tribute to Karl Holland, an 18-year-old who tragically drowned in the reservoir on Friday, June 10. His death has left the community in mourning, but residents have expressed dismay that the firework display led to such destruction.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the fire service has not yet commented on its origin.

Local residents have voiced their frustration at the incident. One woman, who asked not to be named, said: "It's absolutely baffling. There are signs everywhere saying 'no fireworks.' What part of that don't they understand? People need to use their brains more. I feel sorry for the firefighters having to fight it in this heat." Another neighbour described the scene as "like an audition for Dante's Inferno" and called for a park ranger to be introduced to prevent future problems.

Rob from Greenfield said: "It's just stupid. With the conditions so tinder-dry, they should have known better. This is becoming a big frustration for locals. If it's an accident, fine, but when people bring fireworks or barbecues, it's ridiculous. Some people are so selfish."

Fire crews have faced gruelling conditions, with steep terrain and dry vegetation hindering their efforts. They have been using specialist equipment to tackle the flames, which have sent plumes of smoke across the valley. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has urged the public to avoid the area while operations continue.

The fire has destroyed substantial areas of moorland, including habitat for ground-nesting birds and other wildlife. The timing could not be worse, with the moor in a tinder-dry state after weeks of dry weather. Conservationists have expressed concern about the long-term recovery of the ecosystem.
