Firefighters are continuing to tackle large moorland fires at Dovestone and Swineshaw in Greater Manchester, with operations expected to run through the week and into the weekend. A major incident was declared by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) after a fire broke out near Dovestone Reservoir in Greenfield on the evening of 11 July.

More than 70 firefighters and 15 fire engines, along with four specialist wildfire units, are deployed. Helicopters are being used for water drops and aerial surveys. A separate fire at Swineshaw is also being tackled by multi-agency teams.

The public are urged to avoid the affected areas and keep access routes clear. People are asked not to use disposable barbecues, campfires, or any naked flames on the moorland, as dry conditions increase the risk of further fires.

Residents affected by smoke are advised to stay indoors with windows and doors closed. UK Health Security Agency advice warns that smoke may cause health issues, particularly for those with respiratory conditions. Once smoke clears, homes should be ventilated.

Firefighters are working day and night, with relief crews rotating to maintain operations. The fireground is remote and difficult to access, requiring specialist equipment and support from partner agencies, including Derbyshire, South Wales, Lancashire, and Hereford & Worcester fire services, United Utilities, and the RSPB.

GMFRS thanked local communities for their patience and urged people not to bring donations to the scene, as crews have welfare arrangements in place. The fires remain active, with containment efforts expected to continue through the weekend.
