Dobcross Youth Band, from the Saddleworth area of Oldham, has returned from the National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain with silver and bronze certificates of achievement.

The championships, held in Birmingham on Saturday 28th March, are a major event in the youth brass band calendar. Organised by Brass Band England, they brought together 42 bands from across the country to compete in a celebration of youth brass banding.

Dobcross Youth Band fielded all three of its sections: the beginner band, trainer band, and youth band. A total of 78 young musicians, aged from seven to 18, travelled to Birmingham. Several were competing for the first time, and a selection of first-time soloists performed on the national stage.

The training band was awarded a silver certificate of achievement, while the youth band received a bronze certificate of achievement. The results reflect the dedication of the players and the support of the band's volunteers, including musical director Steve Beardmore and band secretary Jenny Wood.

Jenny Wood said: “The event was remarkable as ever and the children had a wonderful time. It was great to see many of our youngsters playing for the first time at the event, including a selection of first time soloists.”

She added: “We were delighted with performances from all three bands who played brilliantly. The adjudicators’ comments and the experience gained will be useful for all three bands as they step into a busy season with Whit Friday on the horizon.”

Whit Friday is a highlight of the local brass band calendar, with contests taking place across Saddleworth and Oldham. For Dobcross Youth Band, it will be an opportunity to apply the lessons learned in Birmingham.
