Diggle Brass Band seeks new Musical Director after Sean steps down, ending successful era for Oldham community.

Diggle Brass Band is searching for a new Musical Director after Sean, who has led the group for the past four years, announced he is stepping down to pursue new adventures.
The band shared the news on its Facebook page, paying warm tribute to Sean's dedication and impact during his tenure. "After four fantastic years at the helm of Diggle Brass Band, Sean has decided to step down from his role as Musical Director," the statement read, adding that they wished him every happiness in the next chapter of his life.
During his time as MD, Sean guided Diggle through an impressive period of success. Highlights included being crowned Saddleworth Whit Friday champions, winning the Leicestershire Contest in 2022 in the second section, finishing as runners-up at the North West Areas in 2024, and securing third place in the first section at the 2025 areas. His leadership saw the band develop both musically and socially, creating a positive and ambitious environment praised by players and audiences alike.
Beyond contest achievements, Sean led the band in countless community events, including concerts, remembrance services, Christmas performances, St George's Day celebrations, and preview evenings. The band noted that he always brought enthusiasm, professionalism, and a genuine passion for making music to every occasion. "Not every contest result went exactly as we hoped, but Sean always helped us regroup, learn from the experience, and come back stronger," they added.
Now, the band is looking for an enthusiastic and inspiring Musical Director to build on that legacy. The successful applicant will take charge of the First Section band, which rehearses every Tuesday evening at Diggle Band Club and maintains a strong commitment to contesting, concerts, and community engagement. "They will certainly have some very big boots to fill," the band acknowledged.
Expressions of interest, together with a CV outlining relevant experience, should be emailed to [email protected] or sent by direct message through the band's Facebook or Instagram pages. The closing date for applications is Friday, 26 June, with auditions by invitation from Monday, 29 June. Any appointment will be subject to a satisfactory DBS check and associated safeguarding requirements.
The band concluded its tribute by thanking Sean and wishing him well: "You will always be part of the Diggle Brass Band family, and we hope this is not goodbye but simply the beginning of a new chapter."
