A father from Derker has been named First Choice Homes Oldham’s Hidden Hero for May, recognised for his tireless volunteer work with a local dads’ group that has transformed lives in the community.

Robert Prestwich, a 45-year-old graphic designer, has been supporting Men Behaving Dadly since 2019, giving his time and skills to help organise sessions, create graphics, and represent the charity at community events across Oldham. The group, which provides support and activities for fathers and male caregivers, has become a lifeline for many families in the area.

Robert, who has an 11-year-old daughter named Serah, received a certificate and a £50 shopping voucher from First Choice Homes Oldham as part of their Hidden Hero scheme, which celebrates local residents who make a difference behind the scenes.

Speaking about the recognition, Robert said he was humbled to be chosen and reflected on how joining the group had changed his own life. “The group is just for dads or male caregivers and they are the best group of dads I’ve ever come across who are now my friends and their children are my daughter’s friends too,” he said.

“Back when I joined the group, I didn’t have much money and couldn’t take my daughter on fancy days out, so I began attending Men Behaving Dadly and met this wonderful community.”

He explained that the group has grown beyond weekly sessions and now organises a range of activities, including barbecues, park visits, cinema trips, and occasional evenings out for fathers, fostering a strong sense of connection and mutual support.

Robert’s dedication was highlighted by Rachel Graham, activity coordinator at Men Behaving Dadly, who nominated him for the Hidden Hero award. She praised his consistent commitment to the charity’s mission.

“Rob consistently goes above and beyond to support our group and the wider community, often without recognition and he really embodies the values of MBD,” Rachel said.

She added that Robert had helped redesign logos and graphics, contributed to planning and development work, and represented the organisation at community events and research projects, all while balancing his role as a father and his professional work.

“Rob’s dedication, positivity, and genuine care for others make a significant difference to the lives of the dads and families we work with, and he really is a true Hidden Hero who deserves to step out into the limelight,” she said.

Men Behaving Dadly, which operates in Oldham and surrounding areas, focuses on supporting fathers and male carers through peer support, activities, and community events. The group plays a vital role in tackling social isolation and promoting positive parenting, particularly for those who may struggle financially or lack local connections.

Robert’s story is a testament to the impact of community volunteering in Oldham. His work with Men Behaving Dadly has not only benefited his own family but has also created a welcoming space for other dads to find friendship and support.

The Hidden Hero award from First Choice Homes Oldham aims to shine a light on such unsung contributions. Kevin Field, FCHO Funding and Social Value Officer, presented the award to Robert, acknowledging the ripple effect of his efforts across the Derker area and beyond.

For Robert, the recognition is an opportunity to encourage others to get involved. “It’s about being there for each other,” he said. “This group has given me and my daughter so much, and I’m proud to give something back to the community that’s supported us.”
