John Taylor, who has volunteered with the Oldham dads charity Men Behaving Dadly (MBD) since 2021, has been named First Choice Homes Oldham's October Hidden Hero.

The 41-year-old delivery driver from Derker is a single parent to a 10-year-old son. He was nominated by Rachel Graham, activity coordinator at MBD, for the role he plays in welcoming and supporting dads who are new to the group.

Mr Taylor received his certificate and a £50 shopping voucher from the housing association's Funding and Social Value Officer, Kevin. He said he was surprised but pleased to get the award for doing something he enjoys.

He explained that attending MBD had taken a weight off his shoulders, and he wanted others to feel the same, which is why he makes sure newcomers are welcome at the group's Saturday sessions.

"No one judges and everyone will be met with a friendly smile and a brew," he said. He added that the sessions also help the children, giving them a safe space to play, do crafts and take part in activities while the dads catch up. Some children who were shy at first now run off to play for the whole session, he said.

Ms Graham said Mr Taylor is often the first to greet new attendees with a smile and a cuppa, helping them feel comfortable, included and confident to come back. She said he also spreads the word about the group, attending events and visiting parks and libraries to talk to other fathers.

She added that he regularly arrives early to help set up sessions, helps organise trips and takes part in community activities such as litter picks, describing him as an outstanding role model who deserves the recognition.
