Children got the chance to sit in a police car, sound the siren and activate the flashing blue lights during a free holiday session at Stoneleigh Park in Derker.

The activity was a highlight of the weekly Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme held every Wednesday during the school holidays. It is organised by Oldham Council and the Friends of Stoneleigh Park community group.

High Sheriff of Greater Manchester Mark Llewellin visited to meet families and see the sessions in action. He said the chance for young people to meet officers in a relaxed setting helps build trust.

The sessions offer local children a range of activities, a healthy lunch and a safe place to make friends during the holidays. Activities on the day included sports, face painting, a bouncy castle and a helter skelter.

Carrie-Ann Varey, Holiday Activities and Food Manager for Oldham Council, said: "It's about creating opportunities for children to be active, enjoy healthy food, build confidence and make new friends."

The HAF programme is a government-funded initiative. It is aimed at children and young people aged five to 16 who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals.

During his tour of the park, Mr Llewellin also answered questions from children about his role, which is appointed by His Majesty the King to help maintain justice and preserve peace in Greater Manchester.
