A needlecraft group in Saddleworth is celebrating over two decades of creativity and friendship, and it’s inviting more people from Oldham to join in.

Canalside Craft and Chat meets every Tuesday at Saddleworth Museum in Uppermill, offering a welcoming space for anyone interested in sewing, knitting, crocheting, and more. With over 20 members, the group has grown from its origins as a quilting circle into a vibrant community of crafters.

Group organisers Pat Sykes and Julia Greene, who enjoy crocheting and quilting, highlighted the inclusive nature of the group. “It’s a wonderful community of crafters who enjoy all types of needlework. Whether you’re a beginner, someone wanting to try new crafts, or a long-time needlecrafter, we’d love to meet you. Do come by to find out more,” they said.

Members have benefited from both the creative and social aspects of the group. Enid Taylor, who knits jumpers and sews, said: “I’ve sewn for many years, so it’s lovely meeting people who share the same passion. I really look forward to seeing everyone on a Tuesday, being creative, and catching up on news.”

Joan Wood joined to take up a new hobby. “I’d always been interested in sewing, and this was a chance to learn. Since joining, I’ve learned to make baby quilts, and my next project is a full-size quilt. It’s a really friendly group, and everyone is so helpful,” she said.

For newcomer Louise Parker-Backhouse, who moved to Saddleworth in 2025, the group provided a way to meet new people and learn embroidery. “I picked up a leaflet at Saddleworth Museum and joined before I moved into the area. I’m learning to embroider and have already stitched a Paddington Bear for my grandson. I’d recommend it to anyone wanting to try something new,” she said.

The group recently changed its name from a local quilting group to Canalside Craft and Chat to better reflect the diversity of crafts and its social nature. Pat Bridgestock, one of the original members, recalled: “It’s amazing to see how our community has grown. We were started by seven passionate quilters led by Sue Warburton, and now we have morning and afternoon sessions.”

The group benefits from its location at Saddleworth Museum, where they have access to sewing machines, crafting tools, and a library of books and magazines for inspiration. They also organise an annual trip to a major crafting show.
