An inquest has heard new details in the tragic death of a 35-year-old father who was restrained by passengers and crew on a Jet2 flight from Cyprus to Manchester Airport. Callum Kerr, a bareknuckle boxer and cage fighter from Warrington, was found unresponsive by police after the plane landed and later died in hospital.

At Manchester Coroner's Court, senior coroner Zak Golombeck said Mr Kerr had been drinking on the flight and was informed by cabin crew that they would no longer serve him additional drinks. A reported altercation then occurred between Mr Kerr and other passengers, and as the plane prepared to land, he refused to return to his seat. He was subsequently restrained by passengers and a crew member on the floor.

Officers found Mr Kerr restrained in a seated, leaning-forward position and applied handcuffs, but then noted he was unresponsive. CPR was commenced by police and paramedics from North West Ambulance Service, who took over at 2.50am. He was taken to hospital, where he died the following day.

The coroner stated that a post-mortem has been conducted but a final cause of death is still awaited. This will help determine the next stages of the inquest. A further hearing has been scheduled for February 8 next year.

In a tribute, Mr Kerr's family said: "Callum was a family man, father to three beautiful young children, a lover of sport and with a heart of gold." His parents, Andrea and George, attended the hearing via videolink, with his father saying a police family liaison officer was keeping them informed.

Three investigations are ongoing: a criminal investigation by Greater Manchester Police (GMP), a separate probe by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), and an internal inquiry by Jet2. Police said they were called to reports of aggressive behaviour on the flight, including assaults on a passenger and crew member. The force referred itself to the IOPC due to police contact with Mr Kerr before his death, but emphasised there is no indication of misconduct.

GMP bosses said officers from the Major Incident Team are investigating the circumstances on the flight prior to police arrival. The IOPC said it would look into the actions and decision-making of the officers involved. Jet2 expressed condolences but declined further comment.

The incident has drawn attention from across Greater Manchester, including Oldham, as residents await the outcomes of the various inquiries.
