A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man at a karaoke bar in Ashton, leading to the temporary closure of the venue by Tameside Council. The incident occurred over the weekend at Blues Cabaret and Karaoke Bar on Bow Street, in the heart of Ashton town centre, and has sent shockwaves through the local community, including in nearby Oldham.

Greater Manchester Police requested the suspension of the bar's licence at a hearing today (July 14) at Tameside One council building. PC Craig Foley told the licensing panel: "There is a concern over the management of the premises and their capability to run a safe venue for members of the public to visit." The police called for the temporary suspension until a full licence review can be conducted, citing the severity of the incident.

Bar owners Christopher Thompson and Colin Campbell attended the hearing and did not oppose the suspension. They voluntarily closed the venue following the death of Shane Cullen and expressed their devastation. Mr Campbell said: "We and the staff are devastated by the death of Shane Cullen and our thoughts are with his family. We are not opposing the suspension. We are already reviewing our operations to understand what could have been done differently." He also offered the bar's "sincere condolences" to Mr Cullen's loved ones.

PC Craig Foley commended the owners' "respectful" decision to comply with the suspension and close down voluntarily for the foreseeable future. The licensing panel, chaired by Coun Greg McNally, decided to temporarily suspend the licence of Blues Cabaret and Karaoke Bar until a full review takes place. The next hearing will occur within 28 days, following investigations by police and licensing authorities.
